The girls are back together!
We received a call on Monday morning from the Neonatologist -- "your daughter Emily tells me that she wants to come home' he said. "Really?" Geoff asked. There was some question about how Abby's discharge was handled. It was everyone's opinion that my insurance company (Humana) pushed to get Abby discharged sooner than the doctors were comfortable with. So we wanted to be sure that this news about Emily was indeed the doctor talking and not my insurance company. He assured us that he felt that Emily was ready to come home -- she reached the 4 lb. mark and was doing really well with her feedings and her body temperature was excellent!
Our little girl was feeling left out and was doing everything in her power to be reunited with her sister!
We felt a little overwhelmed -- we had just been home with Abby for one day... were we ready for Emily to come home too? There was no way for us to buy more time -- Emily was ready and she was going to come home, whether we were ready or not.
We scrambled to make arrangements for one of our neighbors to watch Abby while we went to get Emily -- unfortunately, Abby could not come with. Geoff brought in the car seat, so they could do the car seat test, to make sure she could maintain a good repiratory rate while sitting up in a car seat. She passed with flying colors -- our little girl was coming home!
We got to the hospital and went through the discharge process once again -- two babies, twice as much education. We figured it wouldn't hurt to hear it all again, since we could use all the help we could get! We got her bundled up in the car seat (we knew what we were doing by now) and Emily was on her way home! She looked so much smaller than Abby did in the car seat, but we knew that she would be okay. I held her hand too during the car ride -- I suppose it is my mommy instinct. It helps me feel more secure.
Soon after we got home, we got Emily out of her car seat and got Abby from the bassinet she was sleeping in. Both girls were bundled up and we moved them to the pack n' play so they could sleep next to each other. What a beautiful picture -- both girls were home, safe and sound! What a wonderful life we have...
